Top Things to see in Chianciano Old Town
There is a historic part of Chianciano Terme, called Chianciano Vecchia or Chianciano Paese that will appeal to both art and history lovers alike.
The area is conveniently connected with the more modern, spa-focused area by the street Viale della Libertá.
From Piazza Italia, it can be reached in 5 minutes by car and approximately 30 minutes on foot.
The Centro Storico, which is situated on a hill, is protected by solid medieval walls and can be accessed through three arched gates or porte.
Whether you are living in Chianciano or simply staying for 1-2 days, its historic center is something that you don’t want to miss.
Below you can find a list of top things to see.
1. Porta Rivellini
This is definitely difficult to miss as it’s the main gate for entering the old town.
This Renaissance structure was originally called Porta delle Taverne, because it hosted several cosy taverns, and later Porta del Poggiolo, after a small water fountain, which still exists today.
Finally it was named Porta Rivellini after rivellino, which is a type of trim protecting major fortifications.
2. Church of the Immaculate Conception or Chiesa dell’Immacolata
Originally and back in 1272, the Chiesa dell’Immacolata was a hospital. Later in 1475 a church was built, Santa Maria della Stella.
This tiny little church was then destroyed during the 1550 Siena Ware and then restored in 1580, after taking the name Chiesa della Misericordia.
The current name dates back to 1958.
3. Clock Tower or Torre dell’Orologio
The current Clock Tower or Torre dell’Orologio is one of the oldest structures of the Centro Storico dating back to 1287.
Originally one of two towers, which were both destroyed following the expulsion of the Medici from the town, the tower was later supplied with a clock and bell by the Goro family.
Additional interventions on the tower were carried out between 1557-1743 under the Medici’s rule, while the still-visible coat of arms was installed in 1557.
Restored in later centuries, in 1847 the tower was also extended, while the clock was installed in 1933.
4. Piazza Matteotti
Piazza Matteotti is the main square of Chianciano Old Town.
It’s where you can find one of the two post offices of the town, the city hall, as well as a number of local shops.
The main attraction of the square is a beautiful 18th century water fountain covered in marble.
5. Manenti Castle or Monastery
On the left of Piazza Matteotti you will find the Manenti Castle or Monastery.
The Monastero Manenti used to host a convent of nuns back in 1300.
The castle went through a number of disputes between Orvieto and Siena. Finally, in 1557 it was conquered by Florence together with the entire Tuscany.
Spend an hour or two savouring the view or enjoying a refreshing swim, before venturing off to explore other attractions in the area, such as the Seychelles Tea Factory, SMAC Adventures Zip Line and Port Launay.

7. Palazzo De Vegni
8. Luigi Pirandello plaque
